Despite the awesomeness of California, we always have natural disasters that occur. Because of that, it's important to be aware of what they are, how they affect us, and what we can do if one happens.

An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves.

Earthquakes happen when the Earth's plates build up enough pressure between themselves to cause one of the plates to slip. Strikeslip-fault.gif

Some earthquakes are very small and hardly noticeable.
