Most matter is made up of a combination of elements. However, some matter has only one kind of atom. An element is matter that is made up of only one kind of atom.

There are 92 elements that occur naturally. The remaining elements have been made in laboratory experiments.
This is a periodic table. Elements are arranged in a periodic table for easy reference. Each element is represented by a symbol. The symbol is one, two, or three letters that represent the name of an element.

There are 25 elements essential to living things.

In fact, four elements — oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen — make up 96.3 percent of a person's weight. These same elements make up the matter of most other living things.
