Pt. 1

This month for math we are going to talk about the 4 seasons of the year. But what is a season?

A season is a time of year.

There are 4 seasons, can you name them?

That's right. They are the winter.

Winter is the season that follows fall.

Looking at this picture, what season are we in now? How can you tell?

What is your favorite season? How come?

Pt. 2 Winter

A season is a time of year that has it's own kind of weather. Have you ever noticed that there are times when it is hot for a long time? Or maybe it's rainy or cold for a long time? That is because we are going through the cycle of different seasons.

The seasons go in a cycle and the cycle repeats every year.
Seasons Cycle 1.jpg

Seasons Cycle 2.jpg
Winter is the season that follows fall. Winter is the coldest season of the year.

Winter 1.jpg

The temperature gets colder because we are farther away from the sun during that season.

Winter Tree.jpeg

Leaves and fruit fall and the trees rest.

Animal Winter.jpg
Do you think it's harder for animals to find food this time of year? Why?
(Many plants have died. Snow covers the ground.)

Sometimes it is hard for animals to find food in the winter. In cold weather, many plants stop growing. Some plants die, others rest, and some are covered with snow.

Can anyone tell me what happens when there is less sunlight? (It gets colder).

Do you think some animals store food for the winter? Why? (There will be less food available during this season so they need to store food for the winter.)

Winter weather is very different in different places. Winter is very cold in some places.

(for students who are nonverbal, show them the weather cards "sunny" and "snowy" and ask "Looking at this picture, which type of weather do you think matches this picture?")

Some places have wet winters.
Central California Winter.jpeg
Rain keeps the grass green during the winter.

Some places have dry winters while in other places, winter is only a little cooler than summer.

Why do people go to the beach during the winter in some places? (Temperatures are warm in some places)

(while watching the video, have students take notice of surroundings, types of clothing people are wearing, etc.)

Again, the four seasons are Fall, Winter (which we just talked about), Spring, and Summer. They repeat in a cycle. Can someone tell me the season after Fall? (Winter)

Can anyone tell me what the coldest season of the year? (Winter)

(show students "snow")
(do Winter Clothes worksheet)

Part 3:

This month we have been talking about the 4 seasons; can you name one of them?

Seasons Cycle 2.jpg

Which tree do you think represents Winter? Why?

Today we are going to talk about the season of Spring.
spring-photography-30-500x366.jpegSpring 3.jpg

Spring is the season that follows winter.

Seasons Cycle 1.jpg

Spring 4.jpeg
Weather begins to get warmer in spring. There is more light from the sun in spring than in winter.

In many places, spring is rainy.
Rainy Spring.jpeg
Warmer weather, rain, and more daylight help plants to grow in the spring.

Many new plants grow in spring. Here is a picture of a tree in the winter.
Winter Tree 1.jpg

Now here is a picture of a tree in the spring. What is different?

Spring Tree.jpg

Looking at this picture, how can you tell it's spring? (Grass is green, trees are starting to grow leaves).

Many baby animals are born in warm spring weather.

Spring Animals 1.jpeg

What are some ways that we can tell it's spring? (Weather gets warmer, new plants grow, baby animals are born)

Last week we talked about the winter season being different in different places. Do you think spring is different in different places?
50 States.gif

Spring weather is different in different places.

Places that were very cold in winter may be cool in spring.
Mount Shasta Spring.jpeg
Notice that while it is now spring time, there is still snow on the far away mountain.

Borrego Springs Spring.jpeg
Spring may be warmer in places that did not have a cold winter.

Boston Spring.jpeg
It's spring time in Boston but this person is still wearing warm clothes.

How can spring weather be different in different places? (It's cool weather in some places and warm weather in others)

How is spring weather different from winter weather? (Spring weather is warmer than winter, it rains instead of snows)

(do spring coloring worksheet)
(depending on weather, have lunch outside).

Part 4:

Over the last few walks we have been talking about the different seasons. Can you tell me one of the seasons?
Seasons Cycle 1.jpg

Last week we talked about the season of spring. Spring is the season that follows winter. In the spring the weather gets warmer, plants begin to grow and many baby animals are born.

This week we are going to talk about the season of summer.
Summer is the season that follows spring and is the warmest season of the year.

How are spring and summer different? (Summer weather is warmer than spring. There is more light from the Sun in the summer.)

Summer Tree.jpg

Is it more likely to snow in winter or summer? Why? (Winter, because winter is the coldest season and it snows when it's cold).

Summer weather is different in different places.

50 States.gif

Some places have little rain in the summer while other places have a lot.

People and animals look for shade on hot summer days.
